For many people the day starts with coffee. Maybe even at Caffè Spettacolo in Solothurn. But how many people know where their favourite wake-up brew comes from and how it was grown? On Tuesday, 26 June 2018, Caffè Spettacolo will be visited by representatives of the Colombian coffee cooperative ANEI based in northern Colombia in the Sierra Nevada and Serranía del Perijá regions. Since 1995, several indigenous groups have been growing organic fair trade coffee there to strengthen their community and secure an income by exporting their organic beans. Caffè Spettacolo supports the cooperative and uses the ANEI beans in all its hot coffee beverages.
Not all beans are equal
To celebrate the end of renovations at the coffee bar in Solothurn in mid-June, visitors are invited to come and find out more about the beans grown by the Colombian cooperative on 26 June 2018 from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. In the cosy coffee bar with even more Italian flair than before, the ANEI representatives will explain what is behind the 'organic' and 'fair trade' labels and how to recognise the quality of a bean. And the theory should also be tested in practice, of course: how does coffee made from pure and aromatic Colombian Arabica beans smell and taste? And who can identify its fresh hints of citrus or nuts in Caffè Spettacolo's coffee roasting?
Fifty cents per coffee for the organic fertiliser plant
Caffè Spettacolo has been using the beans of the ANEI cooperative since 2014. This dedication selectively promotes organic agriculture in the cooperative's home region and ensures the long-term food security of the people. The ANEI cooperative needs special support as the harvest of the organic farmers is smaller than for conventional plantations. This is why Caffè Spettacolo has run various specials since 2014 to help the farmers build an organic fertiliser plant. This will sustainably improve the soil, which will not only help to increase the coffee harvest, but also make it easier to grow basic foodstuffs such as beans and maize.
